Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal History:
This street used to run alongside a canal. Before 1385, the Amstel River divided Amsterdam into two parts: the "old side" with the Oude Kerk and the "new side" with the Nieuwe Kerk. Each side had a wall. When new walls were built around 1385, the existing wall became the "front wall" (Voorburgwal) and the new one became the "back wall" (Achterburgwal), on both sides.
